Composition and the Notan

In this workshop, we will seek to simplify compositions using notans, a Japanese term meaning “light and dark.” We will practice reducing images to 2 and 3 values in order to create strong compositional ideas that can then be used for larger works. You will also be introduced to the six major types of rectangles commonly used by artists to compose images. In addition, we will also discuss how to use Photoshop as a tool to aid in compositional study.

Note: All materials will be provided. A $10.00 supply fee is to be paid to the instructor at the beginning of the workshop.
