Heads UP! Stretching a 3-D Canvas in Clay

Guest artist:  Billy Ray Mangham

Take this great opportunity to learn how to construct a human head as a canvas for artistic statement.  During this two day workshop, four simple construction techniques will be presented, including wheel, slab, and slab/coil; facial layout and methods to shape eyes, nose, mouth, and ears will be demonstrated. Participants will choose how they wish to construct, based upon their working process and how they envision the finished piece. Add color and interest by experimenting with speedball underglazes, scrafitto, wax resist, brushwork, and several other decorative techniques to bring your vision to life.   Come prepared to play hard and have fun!  All skill levels are welcome.

In addition to creating the project, various issues faced as artists will be discussed: overcoming fear, creative blockage, the importance of being in the 'flow', and the difference between folk art and fine art.  Revel in working with clay in a group of like minded colleagues.

Workshop Fee: $200 if registered prior to Dec 17th; otherwise $250

Supply Fee:  None.  Clay is available for purchase or bring your own.

Bring: brushes for slip painting, carving tools, and the typical handbuilding and throwing tools.
