D102 Portrait Drawing Cauller

This class focuses on drawing portraits of people. We will develop a basic understanding of facial anatomy and proportions and learn techniques to create expressive likenesses. Both monochromatic and color media will be explored.

Suggested supplies: soft vine and compressed charcoal (not Soho brand), white charcoal pencil, Caran DAche Neocolor I or II wax pastels, kneaded eraser, Panpastel black, Sofft tool, proportion divider, workable fixative spray, 18 x 24" Drawing pad. (Jerry's Artarama is a recommended retail source for art supplies.)

The word Pastel brings up images of soft, light even romantic paintings.  For example Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas. Not necessarily true! Pastel pigments are the purest form of all the artist mediums and extremely versatile. They can delivery both bold and dynamic paintings! We will experiment with different methods of doing under paintings and different techniques of applying the pastels to achieve the results you are looking for. 

For first class, please bring any supplies you have and we will review the supply list


D202 Pet Portraits (Int/Adv) Cauller

This class focuses on drawing portraits of pets. Students  will build on a basic understanding of observational drawing, and learn techniques to create likenesses. Both monochromatic and color media will be explored. Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing or basic drawing skills required.

Suggested supplies: quality reference photos of pets, soft vine and compressed charcoal (not Soho brand), white charcoal pencil, pastel pencils, kneaded eraser, proportion divider, 18 x 24 Drawing pad. (Jerry's Artarama is a recommended retail source for supplies.)

This class offers studio time for intermediate/ advanced drawing students to work on ongoing projects under the guidance of an instructor. 


D301 Painting with Acrylics (All Levels) Paula Mitchell

Students will learn how to paint with fast drying acryclic paints. I will show you different techniques, mixed media, layering, and building a focal point. You can use the painting the instructor will bring or be brave and bring your own. We will make it work and have fun all at the same time!

This is a 7-week session.

Learn the basic techniques to use the difficult medium of watercolor. You will complete a painting each week following the step by step instructions and demonstrations by the teacher. You will work primarily from photographs to paint both still lifes and landscapes. More advanced students may wish to work from their own photographs with individual help from the instructor.

While learning the essentials, the instructor will work with each student to help develop a personal style of painting. Apply your basic drawing skills to the study of the human figure, focused on drawing live models in both short and long poses. Learn to capture gesture, movement, and form of the body, and understand the basics of underlying anatomy with an observational rather than formulaic approach. Model fee $60.

Explore watercolor painting techniques with a focus on fundamentals, including how to see and mix colors and how to represent form using the right values.
