Boro: The Art of Visible Mending (Beg) Berry

  • Craft Guild of Dallas 3410 Midcourt Road Carrollton, TX, 75006 United States (map)

The Japanese technique of Boro is, at its simplest, the act of repairing or reinforcing a garment so that it can continue to be worn. This was a necessity in the Edo period where Japanese peasants had no access to quality fabric and wore clothing made from hemp that they grew, spun, and wove themselves. Clothes were mended again and again and passed down from generation to generation. When fabric became readily available, these same Japanese peasants destroyed and sometimes buried their mended clothing because of the shame of their poverty. Today this mending practice has evolved into a gorgeous art form. It offers us the opportunity to find beauty in simplicity, to not be wasteful, to combine scraps of fabric into artistic expression. Students are welcome to bring an item of clothing to be repaired or embellished or to use a simple piece of muslin provided.
